Point Ventures AS offers Geology & Geophysics and resource/risk evaluation expertise throughout the cycle of Exploration-Appraisal licence portfolio management to help Exploration and Production companies optimise the value of their licence portfolio. We can assist from the start of the licence life to its end. We work preferably embedded in client’s teams as a close collaboration with all stakeholders is beneficial. This encompasses the following stages:
- Licence rounds: evaluation of prospectivity and preparation of round application (clients’ decision gates and application documents)
- Market screening: high level review of assets by company, by geographical area, by geological play…
- Opportunity evaluation: full technical evaluation can be carried out, including liabilities, budgets and work programmes, either for a package or a simple farm-in opportunity
- Executive decision help: detailed study including databases, detailed technical as well as executive presentations, and information memorandum to keep future track of the evaluation can be provided
- Alignment with client’s budget and strategy: whatever the origin of the licence(s), it needs to be integrated in the client’s budget and strategy. This is all the more relevant when a whole package is acquired and the deal was driven by production and/or finance advantages: some parts of the package may contain significant liabilities or unwanted assets and although likely to be identified prior to the acquisition, they need to be adequately integrated in the client’s portfolio.
- Analysis and ranking in line with client’s standards and procedures: likewise, the asset evaluation has to be carried out in line with the client’s Exploration Management System (its technical standards) and brought through its decision gates for validation. This step is often set aside in preliminary stages of an acquisition
- Technical work and representation: we can assist in all stages of the preparation of Technical Committee Meetings (TCM) and stand as a representative for the client
- Selection of candidates for divestment: as a function of adequacy with budget, strategy or value (ranking), we can help clients identify which licence to put on the market
- Definition of objectives: we can help the client define the objectives in terms of nature of divestment and to what extent (equity farm-down or entire farm-out). We can also assist in defining the objectives in terms of transaction terms (swap, ground-floor, carry…)
- Dataroom organisation: we can market the case, prepare dataroom sessions, contact identified clients and follow-up potential buyers
Analyses are carried out on licence deadlines, work programmes and budgets. They can be synthesized in calendars. For example, analysis of the evolution of licensed acreage, both in terms of number and area wise can bring useful learnings. This can be carried out as a look-back or a point forward exercise to help decision making. Like in the example shown here, critical phases are easily identified and adjustment to strategy and/or budget issues can be implemented fruitfully.
Analyses can also be carried out on resources and risks, once they are evaluated in a consistent and homogeneous way, following client’s standards (Exploration Management System). Various tools are used to rank prospects and gauge the balance of the portfolio and its adequacy with client’s strategy and objectives. The portfolio can thus be adjusted accordingly.
